Social Skills Group

Social Skills Group is based on evidence-based social skills training interventions for children, adolescents, and young adults with social and communication challenges. This group offers lessons on enhancing perspective taking and empathy; establishing physical presence in a social setting with one's body language and eye contact; social rules and etiquette; conversational skills; how one's words and actions affects how others' reciprocate their interactions; and assertiveness skills. These lessons help young people improve their communication with others, expand social opportunities, and develop strategies for handling conflict or peer rejection. Our goal is to help children and teens use these skills outside of our groups.
Who would benefit from Social Skills Group?
Most children and teens would benefit from this group, whether they are diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, depression, ADHD, or high functioning autism spectrum disorder. This group is not appropriate for children with more severe symptoms of autism spectrum disorder. Here is a profile of children we often see:
  • Avoids play dates or peer social situations
  • Inflexible to other’s ideas
  • Difficulty joining and participating in groups
  • Not able to hold age appropriate conversations with peers
  • Socially aggressive, shy or awkward
What will my child/teen gain from this group?
During each group session, children and teens are taught important social skills and are given the opportunity to practice these skills in session during socialization activities (e.g., games, role plays, etc.). Children and teens practice and receive feedback not only from our therapists, but also from each other. Parents are taught how to assist their child/teen by providing feedback through coaching during weekly socialization homework assignments. Your child/teen will learn how to implement nonverbal communication skills, conversational skills, concrete social rules, understanding perspective, assertiveness skills, empathy, and much more. Typically, children/teens participate in more than one 12-week rotation to gain full benefit.
